US Death Statistics Over Time

Annual US deaths back to 1968, with the age-adjusted rate spliced to 1900, plus the most current monthly figures CDC has published.

About 3,096,843 people died in the United States in 2025 (provisional), up from 1,930,082 in 1968 as the population grew and aged. Adjusted for that ageing, the death rate has fallen sharply, from about 2,518 per 100,000 in 1900 to 726 in 2025. The charts below cover annual deaths and the latest monthly provisional counts; every chart has a data table and a CSV download.

Deaths by Age

Death is overwhelmingly an old-age event: in 2022, about 54% of US deaths were people aged 75 or older, and roughly 2% were under 25.
