Drug Overdose

The age-adjusted overdose death rate fell from 32.6 per 100,000 in 2023 Q1 to 20.8 in 2025 Q2, a drop of about 36%. This is CDC's actual published overdose-death definition, not the approximation further down.

For a longer run, the closest 113-cause-list stand-in back to 1999 is "accidental poisoning" deaths. It misses overdoses ruled a suicide or of undetermined intent, and includes a small number of non-drug poisonings, so treat it as shape, not a precise count. The last two years are shown muted: overdose deaths take longer to certify than most, so recent provisional counts run low and typically get revised upward.

Figures are national underlying-cause-of-death counts from CDC WONDER (the NCHS 113-cause list), 1999–present. "By firearm" sums suicide and homicide deaths coded as caused by a firearm discharge; it doesn't include unintentional or undetermined-intent firearm deaths, so it runs a little under CDC's own published firearm-death total. Nothing here is individual-level: CDC suppresses any figure based on 1 to 9 deaths.
